Welcome to Something New

You have spent the last nine courses learning how money works. You now know what money is, where it came from, how it moves around the world, why it sometimes fails, and how the systems built around it can let people down. That is a serious amount of knowledge, and it matters because it is the foundation for everything in this course.

Because this course is about something new. Not completely new, it borrows ideas that are thousands of years old. But new in the sense that it did not exist twenty years ago, and the world is still figuring out what to do with it. This course is about cryptocurrency, which is sometimes just called crypto for short. Cryptocurrency is a type of money that exists only on computers and is not controlled by any bank or government. We will explain exactly what that means and how it works as we go. For now, just know that you are about to learn something that many adults do not properly understand, and by the end of this course you will.

This course does not ask you to decide whether crypto is good or bad. That is a question worth thinking about carefully, and we will give you the tools to do that thinking. What this course does is explain how crypto actually works, clearly and honestly, so you can form your own views based on real understanding rather than hype or fear.

A Note Before You Begin

Some of what you are about to read will feel exciting. Some of it will feel complicated at first. Some of it might even feel a little strange, because crypto challenges some of the ideas about money that you have spent the last nine courses building up. That is fine. Good ideas are often strange at first.

What matters most as you read is this: take your time. If something does not make sense on first read, go back and try again. Every new word is explained. Every big idea comes with a story or an example to make it stick. By the end of this course you will not just know what crypto is. You will understand it, and that is something much more valuable.
