What happens when money goes wrong

Course Description

What This Course Is About

Everything you have learned so far in this learning path has been building toward a clear and honest understanding of how the financial system works. You know what money is, how it moves, who it serves, and where it struggles. You understand risk, trust, human behaviour, and the structural cracks that run through even the most sophisticated financial systems. Now it is time to look at what happens when those cracks widen into something bigger. What happens when the system does not just creak but actually breaks, at least for a while, for a lot of people?

This course examines four of the most important and most human ways that financial systems fail: the bank run, the liquidity crisis, currency devaluation, and systemic collapse. These are not abstract theoretical events. They are things that have happened repeatedly throughout history, that are happening in parts of the world right now, and that have caused genuine and sometimes devastating harm to ordinary people who did nothing to bring them about. Understanding them clearly is not meant to make you afraid. It is meant to make you genuinely informed, because these are the kinds of events that separate people who understand money from people who are simply at the mercy of it.

This is also the final course in the How Money Actually Works learning path, which means it carries the responsibility of leaving you in the right place to take on what comes next. By the end of this course, you will have a complete and grounded picture of why the traditional financial system, for all its achievements, has consistently generated crises that harm the very people it is supposed to serve. That understanding is the most honest and the most useful foundation for exploring the alternatives that people have begun to build.

A Note Before You Begin

Some of what this course covers is genuinely difficult to read about, not because it is technically complicated but because it involves real hardship experienced by real people. When we discuss currency devaluation or systemic collapse, we are not discussing abstract numbers. We are discussing situations where people's savings disappeared, where businesses failed overnight, and where years of careful work were undone by forces entirely outside individual control. Treating these events with the seriousness they deserve, rather than as dry case studies, is part of what it means to truly understand how money works.

At the same time, this course is not meant to leave you feeling helpless or despairing about the state of the world. Every crisis in financial history has been followed by adaptation, reform, and in many cases genuine improvement. People learn. Systems change. New approaches emerge. Understanding what has gone wrong in the past is one of the most reliable guides to understanding what better might look like in the future. That is the spirit in which this course is written, and the spirit in which it is best read.
