Types of Crypto

Course Description

Not All Crypto Is the Same

When most people hear the word crypto, they think of Bitcoin. And Bitcoin is a reasonable place to start, because it was the first and is still the most well-known. But Bitcoin is just one type of cryptocurrency among thousands, and those thousands are not all trying to do the same thing. Some are trying to be money. Some are trying to be a platform for building new kinds of programs. Some are trying to hold a stable value. Some exist to power specific networks. And some, honestly, exist for reasons that are harder to justify seriously.

This course introduces you to the main categories of cryptocurrency and the most important examples within each one. It is not trying to cover every coin or token that exists, because that would be both impossible and unhelpful. What it is trying to do is give you a clear mental map of the different types, what each one is trying to achieve, how it works in broad terms, and what the honest trade-offs and risks are. With that map in place, you will be able to look at any new cryptocurrency you encounter and have a sensible framework for thinking about it.

Each chapter in this course goes into genuine depth. These are big topics, and they deserve proper treatment. Take your time with each one. There is no rush, and understanding these ideas well will serve you throughout your entire crypto journey.

A Note on How to Read This Course

These chapters are connected but also stand on their own. If you are already familiar with Bitcoin from earlier courses, Chapter 1 will deepen that understanding rather than repeat what you already know. If a particular topic feels especially interesting to you, spend more time with it. If something does not make sense on a first read, come back to it. The ideas in this course are genuinely worth understanding well, and understanding them well takes a little patience.

As always, this course aims to be balanced and honest. Where something is genuinely exciting, it will say so. Where something carries real risks or has real limitations, it will say that too. The goal is not to make you feel any particular way about crypto. The goal is to make sure that whatever you feel is based on a clear and accurate understanding of what you are looking at.
